Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK), home of the best-selling sedan — the Toyota Camry — along with the Camry Hybrid, Avalon and Solara, is now a place where eco-enthusiasts can enjoy the great outdoors. Near the plant where over 500,000 vehicles are manufactured each year is the Toyota Environmental Education Center| Nature Trail. Overlooking nearly 50 acres of wetlands, prairies and woodlands, the Environmental Education Center is the home to many native plants and wildlife. The Nature Trail, roughly one mile long, winds through the Old and Second Growth Forests of the area and educates hikers along the way. Educational kiosks and tree identification posts highlight the trail's local ecology. If the season is right, there is a chance you will see a Peregrine Falcon, who nests in the canopy of a century-old Oak tree. Staying for lunch? A covered pavilion is suitable for picnicking.
For students and teachers, web-based multidisciplinary lesson plans are available for 4th through 12th grades. Each module and activity is KERA- aligned and designed to help teach environmental responsibility in a practical, user-friendly way. Classroom activities coordinate with the nature trail at TMMK and allow students to apply hands-on learning to real life situations. Guided trail tours for school groups can be scheduled by calling the Toyota Visitor Center at 1-800-866-4485. When visiting, come prepared to spend time outside. The Environmental Education Center includes a covered picnic pavilion and nature trail — both of which are completely outdoors. Sunscreen and/or water is acceptable.
