GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY, (February 9, 2010) —TMMK donated $10,000 to the City of Sadieville, Ky., to go toward the restoration and preservation of the city's Rosenwald School. The Rosenwald School project began in 1912. Spearheaded by Booker T. Washington and funded by Julius Rosenwald, President of Sears & Roebuck, these schools total 5,300 across 15 southern states including six in Scott County, Ky. Less than 12-percent of these schools are still standing, but many communities are searching for funding to get those left restored. Three have already been preserved in Kentucky (Crittenden, Maysville & Mayslick).
"People everywhere are facing challenges with the economy, but Toyota wanted to help with the Rosenwald Project because it is such an important part of our American heritage," stated Steve St. Angelo, President of Toyota's Georgetown plant. "It's also very important to the African-American community." The city of Sadieville is hoping to create a tourism spot once the school has been fully restored. ###### Contact: |
